2014 in music

I was a terrible blogger this year. No reviews, no articles, just one post about an album’s anniversary. I didn’t even finish this in time to post it before going out of town for New Years Eve. Oh well, it’s been a crazy year. Here’s a brief run-down of some of my favorite musical moments from 2014.

tl;dr version: My favorite albums of the year were A Thousand Surfaces by Hard Girls and Never Hungover Again by Joyce Manor.

Shows

Once again I went to a ton of shows, some 50 by my count. Here are some pictures from the most memorable ones:

Off! Jan. 29 at the Casbah. This was part of the Casbah's month-long 25th anniversary celebration and also served as part of the video shoot for their single "Void You Out".

Rocket from the Crypt caps off the Casbah anniversary shows Jan. 31st. Rocket at the Casbah sums up a lot about what I love about San Diego music.

The Lawrence Arms Feb. 15 at the Casbah. I think this was the first time I'd seen them since 2006, and they were great.

Drive Like Jehu, Aug. 31 at Spreckels Organ Pavilion accompanied by San Diego Civic Organist Dr. Carol Williams. This was DLJ’s first performance in 19 years!

A week with the Hot Snakes. Clockwise from top left: Sept. 10 at the Irenic, Sept. 11 at the Casbah, and Sept. 18 at Alex's Bar in Long Beach. The first two were really hot. I was so close to John during the Casbah gig that I caught one of his tuning pegs in the head!
