Halloween songs no. 10: Misfits – “Monster Mash” (Bobby ‘Boris’ Picket & the Crypt-Kickers)

Project 1950The latter-day Misfits covered the Halloween classic “Monster Mash” more than once. The 1990s lineup of Michale Graves (vocals), Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (guitar), Jerry Only (bass), and Dr. CHUD (drums) released a version as a single in 1999, with a studio cut as the A-side and a live version on the B, in conjunction with a DVD release of the 1967 Rankin-Bass stop motion flick Mad Monster Party? It was the first time Jerry Only sang lead vocals on a Misfits track (Graves did backups).

When this lineup disintegrated, Only took over lead vocals and continued the band with punk rock all-stars Dez Cadena (of Black Flag fame) on guitar and Marky Ramone (of the Ramones) on drums. They did a new recording of “Monster Mash” on their Project 1950 album (2003), with musician/film producer John Cafiero singing backups. I feel the multiple recordings of “Monster Mash” really reflect the direction Jerry Only went with the Misfits after relaunching the band in the ’90s, ditching the gruesome, graphic subject matter of the Glenn Danzig era in favor of tamer, campier fare that basically celebrates old B-movies. Love or hate that direction, “Monster Mash” was a perfect song for these lineups to cover and comes off rather well.

I was working in the lab late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise

He did the mash — He did the Monster Mash
The monster mash — And it’s a graveyard smash
He did the mash — It caught on in a flash
He did the mash — He did the Monster Mash

From my laboratory in the castle east
To the master bedroom where the vampires feast
The ghouls all came from their humble abodes
To get a jolt from my electrodes

They did the mash — They did the Monster Mash
The monster mash — And it’s a graveyard smash
They did the mash — It caught on in a flash
They did the mash — They did the Monster Mash

The zombies were having fun
The party had just begun
The guests included Wolfman
Dracula and his son

The scene was rockin’, all were digging the sounds
Igor on chains backed by his baying hounds
The coffin-bangers were about to arrive
With their vocal group The Crypt-Kicker Five

They played the mash — They played the Monster Mash
The monster mash — It was a graveyard smash
They played the mash — It caught on in a flash
They played the mash — They played the Monster Mash

Out from his coffin Drac’s voice did ring
Seems he was troubled by just one thing
He opened the lid, he shook his fist
And said “Whatever happened to my Transylvania Twist?”

It’s now the mash — It’s now the Monster Mash
The monster mash — And It’s graveyard smash
It’s now the mash — It caught on in a flash
It’s now the mash — It’s now the Monster Mash

Everything’s cool, Drac’s a part of the band
My Monster Mash is the hit of the land
For you, the living, this mash was meant too
When you get to my door, tell them Only sent you

Then you can mash — Then you can Monster Mash
The monster mash — And do a graveyard smash
Then you can mash — You’ll catch on in a flash
Then you can mash — Then you can Monster Mash
